Energy healing can spark curiosity, hope, uncertainty, and sometimes strong opinions.
Perhaps someone told you that energy healing conflicts with religion. You may have heard that it lacks scientific support. You might also wonder whether you need special abilities to benefit from it.
These concerns deserve thoughtful and respectful answers.
Energy healing is one of many holistic wellness approaches available today. It can work alongside meditation, breathwork, affirmations, journaling, movement, nutrition, and appropriate healthcare.
It does not require you to abandon medical care or change your personal beliefs.
Instead, energy healing offers another way to explore the connection between your emotions, subconscious mind, body, and overall well-being.
Use of complementary health practices has also increased. An NIH analysis found that 36.7% of American adults used at least one selected complementary approach in 2022. That figure rose from 19.2% in 2002.
This article draws inspiration from Dr. Bradley Nelson’s discussion of common misconceptions about energy healing. His work has helped make these conversations more understandable and accessible.
Let us gently examine ten common myths.
What Is Energy Healing?
Energy healing is a broad term for practices that focus on restoring balance within the whole person.
Different modalities use different methods. Some involve light touch or hands placed near the body. Others use breath, focused attention, movement, sound, muscle testing, or meditation.
The methods I practice use muscle testing to communicate with the subconscious mind.
This process helps us identify trapped emotional energy, energetic imbalances, and unwanted subconscious beliefs. We can then determine whether the body is ready to release them.
The goal is not to diagnose or treat disease. The intention is to support greater balance and your body’s natural healing process.

Myth 1: Energy Healing Has No Scientific Basis
Research surrounding biofields, energy therapies, and mind-body practices continues to develop.
However, we should avoid overstating what researchers have proven.
For example, Reiki has received scientific attention. Yet the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health states that current results remain inconsistent. It also notes that many available studies lack strong quality.
This does not mean that every personal experience lacks value. It means research has not answered every question.
Science often begins by observing patterns, asking questions, and testing possible explanations.
You can remain open-minded while also remaining discerning. You do not need blind faith to explore a complementary wellness practice.
A Helpful Approach
Ask what the practitioner does, what training they hold, and what you can reasonably expect.
A trustworthy practitioner should welcome your questions. They should also avoid promising cures or guaranteed outcomes.
Myth 2: You Must Be Religious or Spiritual
Energy healing does not require membership in any religion.
You do not need to believe in a specific deity, spiritual system, or philosophy. You can enter a session with curiosity rather than certainty.
Some people understand energy through spiritual language. Others prefer words such as nervous system regulation, emotional patterns, intention, or mind-body connection.
Your personal interpretation belongs to you.
A respectful practitioner should never pressure you to adopt their beliefs. The session should support your goals while honoring your values.
Myth 3: Energy Healing Is the Same as Massage
Energy healing and massage therapy are different practices.
Massage therapists manipulate muscles and soft tissues through physical touch. Many energy healing methods involve little or no physical contact.
My sessions do not involve massage.
I use muscle testing to ask the subconscious mind structured yes-or-no questions. This guides us toward the imbalance or emotional energy your body may be ready to address.
Sessions may also take place remotely. Your physical location does not prevent us from completing the muscle-testing process.
Myth 4: You Need Special Powers
You do not need to see auras, feel tingling, or sense energy moving through your body.
Some people notice physical sensations during sessions. Others feel calm, emotional, tired, clear, or completely normal.
None of these responses determines whether the session “worked.”
Dr. Bradley Nelson developed structured systems that practitioners can learn and follow. These systems do not depend on dramatic psychic experiences.
The practitioner relies on training, intention, muscle testing, and a step-by-step process.
You also do not need special abilities to receive a session. You only need a willingness to participate honestly.
Myth 5: The Practitioner Gives You Their Energy
A practitioner does not need to pour personal energy into you.
In the methods I use, I serve as a facilitator. Your subconscious mind provides the direction.
The process identifies information rather than forcing change.
This distinction matters because your body remains central throughout the session. We are not deciding what your body “should” release. We are asking what it is ready to address.
Some clients feel tired after deeper emotional work. Others feel lighter or more peaceful.
Rest, hydration, and gentle reflection may support you during the processing period.
Myth 6: Energy Healing Is Only for Certain Types of People
Energy healing is not reserved for people who follow a particular lifestyle.
You do not need to meditate daily, practice yoga, wear certain clothing, or understand spiritual language.
Clients come from many backgrounds. They may be parents, professionals, entrepreneurs, caregivers, retirees, or people navigating major transitions.
Some feel deeply spiritual. Others approach sessions with practical curiosity.
You can question the process and still explore it. Healthy curiosity often helps you make informed decisions.
Energy healing should meet you where you are.

Myth 7: Energy Healing Is Too New to Trust
Many cultures have explored life energy and mind-body balance for centuries.
Traditional systems often use concepts such as qi, prana, meridians, chakras, breath, and vital energy.
Modern energy healing practices may use newer language or structured tools. However, the larger concept of supporting balance is not new.
At the same time, age alone does not prove that a practice works.
Something old is not automatically effective. Something new is not automatically unreliable.
Look at the individual method, the practitioner’s training, the safety guidelines, and the claims being made.
Discernment allows curiosity and responsibility to exist together.
Myth 8: Energy Healing Is Outdated
The growing interest in complementary practices suggests otherwise.
NIH data show notable growth in meditation, yoga, massage, acupuncture, chiropractic care, and other complementary approaches between 2002 and 2022. Meditation use increased from 7.5% to 17.3% during that period.
People often seek these practices because they want a more whole-person approach.
They may want support for stress, emotional patterns, personal growth, or greater self-awareness.
Energy healing does not need to compete with modern healthcare. The two approaches can serve different purposes.
A person can value medical testing and still explore their emotional or energetic well-being.
Myth 9: One Session Will Fix Everything
Healing rarely follows a straight line.
A single session may uncover something meaningful. However, long-standing patterns often have several layers.
Your experiences, relationships, emotions, habits, environment, and beliefs can all affect how you feel.
Energy healing should not become another source of pressure. You do not need to “fix” every part of yourself.
Instead, you can approach healing as a relationship with yourself.
Notice what changes. Give your body time to process. Practice supportive habits between sessions.
Helpful practices may include journaling, rest, breathwork, time outdoors, affirmations, nourishing meals, movement, and appropriate professional care.
Small shifts can create meaningful momentum.
Myth 10: Energy Healing Replaces Medical or Mental Healthcare
Energy healing should complement appropriate medical and mental healthcare, not replace it.
Please contact a qualified healthcare professional when you have physical symptoms, mental health concerns, or urgent needs.
Energy healing does not diagnose disease. It does not prescribe medication or replace medical treatment.
A practitioner should never advise you to stop medication or ignore medical guidance.
Dr. Nelson’s original misconceptions article also stresses this distinction. His article presents energy healing as a complementary approach rather than a substitute for professional care.
An integrative approach allows you to use the resources that best support your needs.
How the Emotion Code, Body Code, and Belief Code Work
Dr. Bradley Nelson created three related energy healing systems.
Each method uses muscle testing to communicate with the subconscious mind. However, each one explores a different level of imbalance.
The Emotion Code®
The Emotion Code focuses on identifying and releasing trapped emotions.
The method rests on the idea that emotional experiences can leave energetic imprints within the body. These imprints may influence emotional and physical well-being.
Dr. Nelson’s system uses an Emotion Code chart and muscle testing to identify a specific emotional energy.
The practitioner then determines whether more information is needed. A magnet passes over the Governing Meridian to support the release process.
The Emotion Code may help you explore emotional baggage connected with grief, fear, rejection, anger, or other experiences.
It may also help identify a Heart-Wall®, which Dr. Nelson describes as trapped emotional energy surrounding the heart.
The Body Code™
The Body Code expands beyond trapped emotions.
It uses a structured system to explore six primary areas of possible imbalance. These include energies, circuits and systems, toxins, pathogens, misalignments, and nutrition or lifestyle.
The process helps narrow a broad concern into a specific area for energetic correction.
The Body Code does not replace medical testing. It offers a framework for asking the subconscious mind what may need energetic support.
Discover Healing describes the system as a way to identify possible imbalances involving emotions, body systems, structure, environmental factors, and lifestyle needs.
The Belief Code®
The Belief Code explores unwanted subconscious belief systems.
A conscious belief reflects what you knowingly think. A subconscious belief may operate beneath your awareness.
You may consciously believe, “I deserve support.” Yet another part of you may hold, “It is unsafe to trust anyone.”
These inner conflicts can influence choices, reactions, relationships, and goals.
The Belief Code uses muscle testing to identify several possible layers. These may include negative programs, limiting beliefs, faulty core beliefs, images, broadcast messages, and trapped emotions.
The method then follows the connected belief system until the body indicates that it can be released.
Discover Healing describes beliefs as subconscious filters that influence how a person views and experiences life.
Could a Belief Be Stopping You From Trying Energy Healing?
Sometimes resistance protects us.
You may have learned that unfamiliar healing methods are dangerous, foolish, selfish, or wrong. A past experience may also have taught you not to trust your intuition.
You might carry beliefs such as:
“I cannot trust what I cannot see.”
“Trying something new is unsafe.”
“Other people know what is best for me.”
“I will be judged if I follow my own path.”
“I do not deserve to receive support.”
These beliefs may affect more than your opinion of energy healing.
They could influence relationships, career choices, boundaries, confidence, visibility, or your willingness to pursue meaningful goals.
The Belief Code may help identify whether an unwanted subconscious belief conflicts with your conscious desires.
Releasing an energetic belief does not remove your judgment or force a new opinion. Instead, it may create room for more conscious choice.
That freedom can become a natural by-product of the work.

Tips for Exploring Energy Healing Safely
Begin with curiosity instead of pressure.
Research the modality and practitioner. Ask about certification, session structure, privacy, pricing, and realistic expectations.
Choose a clear intention. You might explore confidence, emotional heaviness, boundaries, stress, or a repeating pattern.
I provide notes after each session; however, feel free to record emotional shifts, dreams, reactions, choices, and physical changes during the processing time, and thereafter.
Continue using appropriate healthcare. Energy work should remain part of a broader support system.
Most importantly, listen to yourself. A safe practitioner should respect your questions, boundaries, timing, and right to stop.
Energy Healing Is One Tool Among Many
Energy healing does not need to become your only wellness practice.
It can sit alongside the other holistic tools that support you. These may include meditation, breathwork, affirmations, journaling, movement, nourishing food, and restorative sleep.
Different practices may serve you at different times.
Energy healing offers one way to explore what may be happening beneath the surface. It can help you become curious about emotional energy, subconscious beliefs, and patterns you no longer wish to carry.
You do not need to understand everything before you begin.
You can take one thoughtful step, notice what unfolds, and decide what feels right for you.
